In Australia, farmers are the lifeblood of our country and they are in crisis. Record breaking heat and lack of rain means farmers are struggling to feed sheep and cattle, and keep crops alive. Families on the land are suffering and they need our help. Channel 9 and Rotary Australia have partnered with the National Farmers' Federation, launching an appeal to big business and everyday Australians, so we can provide some emergency relief. 100% of donations goes to the farmers and is tax deductible via Rotary and RAWCS. Every dollar counts.
Donations to the Fund which will be collected in partnership with RAWCS (Rotary Australia World Community Service) and administered by the National Farmers Federation who will ensure that funds are delivered to farmers in need across the country.

The Rotary Youth Leadership Award is a residential camp unlike any other. Over seven days, participants are immersed in a program centered around four key themes: Challenge by choice, diversity, community and time out. We give young people aged 18-25 the opportunity to step away from the distractions of their busy lives and provide the space to think about what is important to them.
Rotary Club of Southbank are looking for candidates who would like to participate in this program. If you or someone you know possess leadership skills or potential, please contact us for further information or view the RYLA District 9800 Website for more information.

Before the 2018-19 year kicked in, the board made a pact to embrace flexibility in how we schedule, conduct and meet for board meetings. Though the case, Rotary International does require the board to meet monthly - so it got us thinking how we can do the change?
In Rotary Club of Southbank's constitution, it does allow the board to meet online if there is no quorum for face-to-face or there is a strong preference to meet online. So guess what, we created a group on Facebook Messenger and we have been conversing daily for the past few months, even in the wee hours of the morning and night - my doing, sorry team!
To not completely ignore face-to-face board meetings, we committed to meet in person once every quarter (July'18, Oct'18, Jan'19, Apr'19) to allow members, visiting Rotarians and guests to attend as observers to listen & discuss about club matters. And we did that on 24th July 2018 @Belgian Beer Cafe, Southbank. It was productive and everyone got something out of it. On behalf of the board, I'd like to thank the following observers for coming:
Remember to keep the following dates free and to RSVP on our website:

These workshops will be hands-on interactive sessions that will include:
Two members from each club are invited to attend, preferably President and/or Membership rep. The workshop is general in nature and not club specific and will provide an understanding of the process that can be used and ideas around how other things, if done properly can improve member recruitment prospects and retention.

Since Brisbane ("Where Else?") in 2011, there has been a Future Leaders Seminar held as an integral part of the pre-Zone Conference training program.
In the lead up to each of those Seminars, Districts from around the Zone have identified Rotarians they think could become their future leaders. From those Seminars have emerged Rotarians who have gone on to be District Chairs and Committee members, Program leaders and Assistant Governors. And from these future District Governors have emerged... Rotarians who have been inspired by the Seminar to offer themselves forward to lead their District when they saw the time was right.
The 2018 Future Leaders Seminar will take place at Hotel Grand Chancellor, Hobart, on Thursday 13 September. It is a one-day event commencing at 9.00 a.m.
Districts should consider nominating Rotarians from their District who are able to share knowledge and experience in Rotary, as well as their thoughts and ideas on how best to lead. Through their involvement in the Seminar, participants will become effective future leaders in a variety of roles within their District. It is an investment in your District's future.
Places are limited, but it is hoped all Districts will be able to identify and nominate at least one future leader to attend - a minimum of 27 participants from across the Zone and across the ditch (New Zealand) sharing their passion for Rotary and their experience.

17th July 2018 marked our first club meeting for the 2018-19 year and we had Molina Swarup Asthana as our guest speaker talking about "Opportunity in the face of adversity". The topic relates to how we as individuals, groups and/or organisations should approach in tackling hurdles and changes in this fast pacing world we live in. In fact, it is so relevant to what Rotary is undergoing at present - with flexibility of meeting frequency, ability to meet either face-to-face or online, having diverse membership, engaging with volunteers, promotion of Rotary through events/projects and many others.
We had a number of guests who came along;
It was a memorable meeting for two reasons:

We kicked off our first club project/event at Boyd Community Hub in Southbank on Saturday 14th July 2018. It was a mid-morning of yoga and mindfulness where three (3) sessions were held to focus on:
There were about 20 attendees that came for this free community event and every participant truly enjoyed it and gave positive feedback - in fact they highly encouraged us to do this more as Southbank hasn't had many of these community driven events recently.
Congratulations and thank you goes to Iris Goh (friend of Rotary) who has co-ordinated this event on our behalf. Without her, this event wouldn't have taken place. Not forgetting our members Jasmin Dhillon in assisting Iris with the sessions and our beloved Nick Kane who kindly printed the posters so that it can be promoted online and throughout our communities.
This is a start of many things to come from our club so stay tuned for more.
We are back at the Belgian Beer Cafe in Southbank on the following dates so please RSVP on our website:

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau recently accepted Rotary's Polio Eradication Champion Award at the Rotary Convention in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, in recognition of his country's contributions to Polio eradication. Canada has been a strong contributor to Polio eradication efforts for decades.

By District Governor, Bronwyn Stephens
Sharing Club's Presidents' changeover events has been an utter joy and privilege. Thank you those who have invited the District Governor group. Apologies to the Clubs where we were not able to accept invitations. Some evenings there were as many as 5 changeovers held and only three of us available to attend.
Something that is fascinating, and we will experience more as the year unfolds. is how very diverse each Club is, and how you each do things your own way. There is so much to share in terms of your great ideas, meeting styles, venues, projects and demographics. One common denominator stands. Fellowship. We love to laugh, share a yarn. do a good job and help others while we are about it.
Rotary International President Barry Rassin said in his letter to incoming Rotary leaders, "Rotary is a team sport. We share the same goal: a world transformed by Rotary service, one project, one club, one community at a time."
Rotary Club of Yarra Bend President Edda Williams added
"That's why we all joined Rotary - to work within a community that shares the same ideals and hopes, to collaborate and cooperate to make a difference in people's lives. To inspire and be inspired. My aim in the for the Rotary year 2018-19 is to share conversations with the Rotary clubs in the Riverside and Eastside clusters so that collaboratively, we can pool resources to maximise the impact we can make in the lives of those in need. I firmly believe in having simple conversations, of making connections and in working together towards a shared and common goal."
Rotary Club of Bendigo Sandhurst President Graeme Lyndos said
We will enjoy our 4F nights. Fun, Fellowship, Food and Fursdays.". Later he said Increased membership is a consequence of what we do.
In 2 weeks' time, Rob Rosaia. Paul Kirkpatrick and I will be attending a Jamshod Dinner, prepared and cooked by Afghani refugee men. This is a direct response to the presentation by Kay Graves and a challenge to our club to involve new members of our community. into who we are and what we do.
Rotary Club of Southbank President Amritpal Singh created a new Rotary theme ....
REAL HAPPINESS IS BY HELPING OTHERS by LEADING THE WAY to MAKE DREAMS REAL by you BEING THE INSPRIRATION to create lasting change
The District Support Team and I are here, stepping outside our Clubs. just to lend a hand in any way you ask. Please call or email if we can be of help. Rotary is important in Community, Youth, Vocational and International service. Thank you for all you will be adding in each of your Clubs. Mark and I look forward to being with you along the journey.
The District Governor is responsible for all of the 60+ clubs in our district and serves the role for one year. Rotary Club of Southbank's own Philip Archer will also be District Governor in 2020-21 and looks forward to following the inspiration created this year by Bronwyn Stephens from the Rotary Club of Melbourne South and next year by Grant Hocking from the Rotary Club of Woodend in leading clubs to be their own leader in their communities.
Below is collection of photos from Bronwyn during her visits to club changeovers. How many clubs can you identifty?
